Health Care Costs Push People into Tough Choices

Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minneapolis, USAWed Apr 01 2026
People are losing their ability to afford medicine, insurance and even food. A recent study shows that almost 80 % of those with marketplace plans now pay higher premiums or deductibles. Because of the loss of tax credits, many families are forced to pick between paying for health care and covering basic needs. The problem is growing, with one in ten people dropping coverage entirely and another tenth unsure if they can keep it all year. Some are switching to high‑deductible plans that leave them exposed if a serious illness strikes. The issue isn’t limited to ACA enrollees. About forty percent of workers with private insurance say their costs rose last year, and a third struggled to pay other bills. Nearly a quarter cut back on retirement savings because of medical expenses.
A Gallup survey from last summer highlighted that both insured and uninsured skip meals or borrow money just to afford a doctor’s visit. Trump’s policies are not easing the strain. New work requirements for Medicaid will likely leave many more people without coverage next year. Efforts to lower drug prices—benchmarking U. S. costs against other rich nations and the TrumpRx portal—have not produced significant savings for consumers. In fact, many drugs on the portal are more expensive than existing generics or other discount sites. The current climate forces ordinary citizens to make painful trade‑offs: forgoing meals, postponing prescriptions or even giving up insurance altogether. These choices highlight a larger systemic problem that continues to worsen as subsidies end and new regulations take effect.
