In the upcoming 2024 presidential election, the healthcare debate is back in the spotlight with two clear contenders: former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Their views on health care couldn't be more different. Harris, once a backer of the "Medicare for All" bill that aimed to eliminate private health insurance, has now shifted her stance. She supports keeping the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, intact and growing it over time. Trump, on the other hand, has been vocal about replacing the ACA, claiming it's "lousy" healthcare, but his specific plans remain vague. He talks about having "concepts" for a better and cheaper alternative, though details are scarce.
Harris' healthcare journey has been a bit of a rollercoaster. During her 2020 presidential campaign, her stance on private health insurance was unclear. At first, she seemed to favor getting rid of it, but later backed off. Now, she wants to keep private insurers in the game, allowing them to offer Medicare plans under strict rules. Trump, meanwhile, has repeatedly attacked the ACA, accusing Harris of wanting to force everyone onto a government-run healthcare system.
The debate over pre-existing conditions is also heating up. Harris argues that Trump's attacks on the ACA could jeopardize coverage for those with pre-existing conditions. Trump denies this, claiming his plans would maintain protections. However, his attempts to replace or weaken the ACA in the past have been met with failure.
Harris wants to continue Biden's work in cracking down on drug companies, expanding the Inflation Reduction Act to negotiate more drug prices for Medicare patients. Trump, while also promising lower drug prices, has distanced himself from a previous plan to tie Medicare prices to other countries.
IVF coverage is another hot topic. Trump wants either the government or private insurers to cover this expensive procedure, but not all Republicans are on board. Some senators have blocked legislation to protect access to IVF, while others have introduced their own packages. The debate continues on how best to make IVF accessible and affordable.
