President Donald Trump has introduced a new healthcare plan. This plan focuses on giving Americans direct money for healthcare through health savings accounts. The idea is to put the power of choice in the hands of individuals. Trump believes this will make healthcare more affordable and accessible. Democrats are not convinced. They argue that these accounts won't replace the tax credits from Obamacare. These credits helped many people pay lower monthly premiums. The new plan also aims to lower drug prices and make insurance companies more transparent about costs and wait times. Trump has been criticized for not having a full alternative to the Affordable Care Act (ACA). During his first term, efforts to repeal and replace the ACA failed. Even now, the new proposal lacks many details. Dr. Mehmet Oz, leading the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, calls it a framework for lawmakers to build on. The White House has talked to Congress about the plan, but no specific lawmakers are working on it yet. Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy from Louisiana says his committee will take action on the president's affordability agenda. However, it's unclear how much money people will get through these savings accounts or who will qualify.
Past similar proposals have been criticized for benefiting higher-income individuals more than those with lower incomes. When asked if the proposal would fully cover people's health costs, the White House press secretary didn't give a direct answer. She only said that every American will see lower costs. This proposal comes after the Obamacare subsidies expired at the end of 2025. Some lawmakers are still working on a compromise to extend these subsidies. Sen. Bernie Moreno, a Republican from Ohio, is part of a bipartisan group proposing a two-year extension. This extension would include added limits on eligibility and an option for savings accounts in the second year. Trump's plan also includes restoring payments that help insurers reduce out-of-pocket costs for low-income customers on mid-level plans. It would make certain medications available over the counter and tie U. S. drug prices to lower prices paid in other countries. The White House mentioned a new website, TrumpRx. gov, for selling medications directly to consumers, but no drugs were listed as of Tuesday.
