Healthcare Shouldn't Be a Political Battleground

Some healthcare workers are making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Recently, a nurse in Florida made a bold statement on social media, saying he wouldn't provide anesthesia to patients who support the "Make America Great Again" movement. He claimed it was his right and ethical duty. But when the post went viral, he quickly backtracked, saying his account was hacked. Sure, it was. This nurse works at a hospital in Florida and was later fired after making threats against a pregnant White House Press Secretary. In a video, he wished harm on her during childbirth. Would you want this person helping deliver your baby? It's a scary thought. Mixing politics with healthcare is a dangerous game. Imagine if healthcare workers started denying treatment based on skin color, religion, or ethnicity. That would be bigotry, plain and simple. But because some people think they have a monopoly on compassion, they see their actions as justified.
This isn't an isolated incident. Just last week, some NYPD detectives were mistreated at a New York hospital because staff thought they were immigration agents. The detectives were there to get medical help after being spit on by a suspect, but instead, they were told to seek care elsewhere. The hospital later apologized, but the damage was done. In Australia, two nurses were fired after bragging on social media about refusing to treat Israeli patients. There have been other cases of doctors being fired for posting antisemitic rants. It's clear that mixing politics with healthcare is becoming a troubling trend. But it's not all bad news. In Israel, doctors regularly treat Palestinian patients, not because they agree politically, but because they see them as human beings deserving of care. That's what an oath means to them. Even in the U. S. , people are starting to feel the pressure. A friend recently had surgery and was vague about their job to avoid any political backlash. It's a sad state of affairs when people feel they have to hide who they are to get proper medical care. We live in divisive times, but one thing should be clear: healthcare workers should never use politics to decide who deserves medical care. It's a dangerous slope, and it's time we put an end to it.
