The latest numbers on heart disease and stroke in the U. S. show both good and bad news. While deaths from these conditions have gone down, they still top the list of causes of death in the country. Almost half of American adults are dealing with some form of cardiovascular disease. This should make people sit up and take notice. Heart disease and stroke are responsible for more deaths than cancer and chronic lung diseases combined. In 2023, nearly 916, 000 people died from cardiovascular disease, a slight drop from the previous year. But sudden cardiac arrests still took a heavy toll, causing over 380, 000 deaths.
The state of heart, kidney, and metabolic health in the U. S. is not great. Many people are not aware of or are not managing their high blood pressure and diabetes well. This is a big miss because these conditions are key to preventing heart problems. Brain health is also a growing concern. More adults are reporting issues with memory and thinking. While stroke deaths have decreased over the years, deaths from dementia have gone up. Preventing heart disease and stroke is all about catching problems early and making lifestyle changes. High blood pressure is a major risk factor, but many people ignore it if it's only slightly elevated. Small changes in daily habits can make a big difference. Moving more, sleeping better, and eating less processed food can greatly improve heart health.
