Hidden struggles: How common is abuse among older women in Spain?
Eastern Andalusia, SpainSat May 16 2026
Every year, nearly half of women over 60 in parts of Spain face some form of mistreatment at home. A recent study in Eastern Andalusia found that 49. 3% of older women surveyed reported being abused in the past year. Psychological abuse was the most frequent—like verbal insults or threats—affecting over a third of participants. Physical abuse came next, followed by financial exploitation, sexual coercion, and neglect. These aren’t just numbers; they represent real lives where trust is broken and safety is at risk.
What makes someone more vulnerable? Age plays a role—older women often face higher risks as health declines. Marital status matters too; widowed or divorced women reported more abuse than those married. Poor self-reported health and loneliness also increased the chances of mistreatment. Many abusers are family members or close caregivers, making it harder for victims to speak out. The study suggests that professionals like doctors and social workers need better training to spot subtle signs of abuse before it escalates.
The findings aren’t surprising to experts who’ve worked in elder care. Many cases go unreported because victims fear retaliation or shame. Others don’t even recognize their suffering as abuse. The study calls for stronger community programs to help isolated seniors and better screening in healthcare visits. Without action, this hidden crisis will keep growing.
