In a clever move to combat mail theft, a Santa Barbara County resident turned the tables on thieves by using an Apple AirTag as bait.
After falling victim to mail theft repeatedly, the woman decided to take matters into her own hands. She mailed herself a package containing an Apple AirTag, a small device that sends out a Bluetooth signal that nearby devices in Apple's Find My network can detect.
When the woman was targeted again, she was ready. The AirTag allowed her to track the thieves' location, leading authorities to two suspects in nearby Santa Maria. Virginia Franchessca Lara, 27, and Donald Ashton Terry, 37, were arrested and face multiple felony charges, including possession of checks with intent to commit fraud, identity theft, and burglary.
The woman's proactive approach not only led to the arrest of the suspects but also helped authorities identify over a dozen other potential victims. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office commended the woman for her innovative solution and is currently working on contacting other victims of theft in this case.
