High‑School Coders Show Off Their Own Games
San Luis Obispo, California, USAThu May 28 2026
Canyon High’s computer science class held its yearly Demo Day during lunch, letting visitors see apps and games the students built all semester.
Students flocked to Josh Underwood’s classroom to watch projects that came from a capstone program where learners tackle real‑world deadlines.
Underwood said the goal is to teach teamwork and interview skills so graduates stand out when they enter jobs or colleges.
Teams first pitch ideas, vote on the best ones, and then split into groups that start coding from scratch.
This year, many teams used artificial‑intelligence tools to break tasks into smaller steps and track progress.
Seniors Vianney Segovia and Reese Dagting described the process as a crash course in communication, teamwork, and self‑management.
Segovia noted they finished a game in less than two weeks, while Dagting learned to better organize her work.
Their pair produced a 2‑D game called “Alice and the White Rabbit” and a 3‑D title, “Catacomb Hotel. ”
Underwood praised the students’ drive and the challenge of keeping them motivated.
Board clerk Erin Wilson applauded the initiative, saying it creates a culture of hard work and excitement that boosts student engagement both in school and beyond.
