Home Care Workers Face Big Safety and Stress Challenges
SpainSun Mar 29 2026
In many rich countries, more people are living longer. Because of this, there is a growing need for help at home. People who do that work are called home care aides (HCAs). A study was done to see how safe these workers feel and what kind of stress they face.
The researchers first sent out a survey to 324 HCAs online. They used a special method that helps reach people who are connected through friends and family. The survey asked about safety measures at work and how often workers feel stressed or pressured.
After the survey, the team talked with three groups of HCAs in 2022. One group was made up of people who care for others, another of immigrant women, and the last of men. These talks happened over video calls until no new ideas came up. The researchers then looked at what the workers said and combined it with the survey results.
The findings were clear. Many HCAs say that safety rules are not followed. They often do not get proper risk checks, tools or training. Their jobs are heavy: they have too many patients, little help from technology, and no chance to grow in their careers. The hours they work make it hard to keep a healthy life outside of work, and many feel forced to work alone.
Because of these conditions, HCAs are exposed to both physical dangers and mental stress. The study points out that the safety measures in place do not match the real risks these workers face.
The voices of HCAs suggest that changes are needed. Better safety checks, more tools and training, fair hours, and support for mental health could make the job safer and less stressful.
