House Moves Forward With Ukraine Aid and New Russian Sanctions
Washington DC, USAFri Jun 05 2026
The U. S. House of Representatives has recently passed a bill that will give Ukraine an additional $8 billion in military loans and extend support until 2027. This move marks a rare moment of cooperation across party lines, with many Republicans backing the package even though the current administration had opposed extra funding for Ukraine.
The vote count was 226 to 195. The bill, called the Ukraine Support Act, also introduces fresh sanctions aimed at Russia for its ongoing conflict. House members highlighted that this action shows the chamber’s commitment to helping Ukraine stand against aggression.
Several key Republicans joined Democrats in supporting the measure. Those from the Armed Services Committee, such as representatives from South Carolina, Ohio, Nebraska, Florida and Virginia, signed the bill. Other supporters include a Pennsylvania representative who co‑chairs the Congressional Ukraine Caucus and a former foreign affairs chair from Texas.
The bill’s journey to the floor was unusual. It only reached a vote after an independent member from California signed a petition that forced the House to consider it. The bipartisan coalition behind the act believes that supporting Ukraine strengthens American security and upholds moral values.
The passage signals a clear stance: the House prefers to back freedom and democracy rather than appear weak in the face of Russian aggression. Senators will now need to consider a similar package and send it back to the President for approval.
