Dave Ward, a familiar face in Houston households for over half a century, has passed away. His funeral will be broadcast live on TV and online platforms, allowing fans to pay their respects one last time.
The public can visit Dave at two locations before the funeral. On Wednesday, December 17, he will lie in repose at the Crimestoppers of Houston Dave Ward Building from 11 a. m. to 6 p. m. The following day, Thursday, December 18, there will be public visitation at George H. Lewis & Sons Funeral Directors from 11 a. m. to 2 p. m. and 4 p. m. to 8 p. m. The funeral service will take place on Friday, December 19, at 12 p. m. at St. Martin's Episcopal Church.
Dave's journey in journalism began in Dallas, where he was born in 1939. He grew up in Huntsville and started his career in radio at KGKB in Tyler while in college. His move to Houston in 1962 marked the beginning of his long association with the city. He joined KNUZ Radio as a news reporter and director, then moved to Channel 13 in 1966. There, he became the station's first on-the-street news reporter and photographer. His career took off when he became the anchor of Eyewitness News at 6 and 10 p. m. in January 1968.
Dave was known for his signature line, "Good evening, friends, " which reflected his genuine connection with viewers. His dedication to accurate reporting and his down-to-earth style made him a trusted figure in Houston. He covered a wide range of events, from space missions to natural disasters, and interviewed numerous notable figures, including five U. S. Presidents.
Beyond his journalism career, Dave was deeply committed to community service. He held various positions in organizations like the Houston Easter Seals Society, the American Cancer Society, and the Leukemia Society. His work with Crime Stoppers of Houston was particularly impactful, helping to establish the program and create crime reenactments that became a model nationwide.
Dave's contributions were recognized with numerous awards, including a regional Emmy, induction into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, and the prestigious Leon Goldstein Award for Outstanding Service in Fighting Crime. His legacy as a respected news anchor and community leader will continue to inspire future generations.
