Many schools in the United States are using a new way to teach history. They focus on stories of struggle and oppression. A group called the Zinn Education Project (ZEP) helps teachers with this. They share lessons and resources for students from kindergarten to high school.
ZEP is named after Howard Zinn, a professor who wrote about history from a different point of view. He saw history through the eyes of those who faced racism and other forms of oppression. His ideas are now used in many classrooms. Over 176, 000 teachers have used ZEP's materials, and more than 765, 000 lessons have been downloaded.
Big school districts like New York City and Chicago use ZEP's resources. They suggest these materials for months like Black History Month and Women’s History Month. For example, New York City schools direct teachers to ZEP for lessons on Black history. They even have a podcast called "Teaching with Seizing Freedom" that tells stories often left out of textbooks.
Some people question this approach. They worry that focusing too much on oppression might not give a full picture of history. Others argue that it's important to teach all sides of history, especially those that have been ignored. Zinn himself described his views as a mix of anarchism and democratic socialism. This background shapes the lessons that ZEP provides.
In Columbus, Ohio, students were given homework that criticized Christopher Columbus. The lesson came from ZEP and talked about the harm he caused. It encouraged students to think about the lives of the Taíno people. Teachers around the country share stories of how ZEP's materials help students engage with history in a deeper way.
The debate continues about how history should be taught. Some believe it's crucial to highlight stories of struggle, while others want a more balanced approach. Regardless, ZEP's influence in classrooms is growing, and its impact on how students learn history is significant.
