How focus changes shape early school success

Mon May 11 2026
Kids in kindergarten and first grade often struggle to stay focused. Their attention jumps around even when the work stays the same. Most tests for focus only look at how many answers are right or how long it takes on average. But what if the real story is in the ups and downs of their response times?
A study tracked 112 young children as they moved from kindergarten to first grade. The researchers watched how steady their responses were in a simple “go or stop” game. They also checked how well the same children did in math and reading tests. The children who stayed more consistent in their response times tended to score higher in math, both at the start and later in first grade. The reading scores, though, didn’t show the same link. This suggests that staying focused in small, steady bursts matters more for math than for reading. It’s like building a house: steady bricks make a stronger wall, but the roof’s shape doesn’t depend on the same kind of focus.
