The way people eat might be changing their brain power as they age. Scientists looked at what older adults in the U. S. eat and how it affects their memory and thinking skills. They found that eating lots of processed foods with added nutrients, instead of whole, natural foods, might make it harder for the brain to work well. First, they studied the eating habits of nearly 3, 000 adults over 60. They noticed four different eating patterns. One of these patterns stood out. People who ate a lot of processed foods, even if those foods had added nutrients, had lower scores on memory and thinking tests. This was especially true for people with high blood pressure or diabetes.
The scientists thought this could be because processed foods often have less of the good stuff that the brain needs to stay healthy. Even when these foods are fortified with extra nutrients, they might not be as good for the brain as natural, whole foods. This study shows that what people eat can really affect their brain health as they get older. It might be a good idea to focus on eating more natural, nutrient-rich foods, especially for people with health conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes. This could help keep their brains sharp and healthy.
