How Inner Strength Shapes Nursing Students’ Moral Choices
Fri May 08 2026
In 2023, researchers surveyed 200 nursing students to see how their inner resources affect their sense of right and wrong.
The study measured three things: psychological capital (confidence, hope, resilience), spiritual well‑being (a sense of purpose and connection), and moral sensitivity (the ability to spot ethical issues in patient care).
Students scored high on confidence and moral sensitivity, while their spiritual scores were moderately strong. Every pair of these measures was positively linked, meaning stronger inner resources matched a sharper ethical awareness.
Statistical analysis showed that both confidence and spirituality independently predicted moral sensitivity, together explaining almost half of the differences among students.
These findings suggest that boosting a student’s self‑beliefs and spiritual outlook could sharpen their ethical judgment in clinical settings.
Educators might consider programs that nurture resilience, optimism and a sense of purpose to build better ethical competence in future nurses.
Further experiments are needed to confirm whether such interventions truly improve moral sensitivity on the job.
