How Movement Shapes Brain Health in Older Adults
Thu Jun 11 2026
Older adults’ brain sharpness can be affected by how they move, sit, and sleep. Scientists used a special math method called compositional data analysis to study the link between real‑time movement tracking and memory tests. Instead of asking people how active they feel, researchers wore motion sensors that recorded minutes spent in different activity levels. The data were treated as parts of a whole, so the time spent in one type of activity automatically adjusted the time available for others.
Results showed that more time in higher‑intensity movement was linked to better cognitive scores, while excessive sitting or poor sleep patterns were related to lower performance. This approach gives a clearer picture of how lifestyle choices influence brain health and helps design better exercise programs for the elderly.
