How Much of Your Body Can You Lose and Still Live?

People can lose a lot of their body and still survive. The human body has about 80 organs. But only five are super important for life. These are the brain, lungs, heart, liver, and kidneys. The brain controls everything. The lungs and heart move oxygen around. The liver helps with digestion and cleaning blood. The kidneys filter waste.
Other parts, like intestines, pancreas, and skin, are important but not vital. Some parts, like wisdom teeth, might not have a purpose. Eyes and tongue are crucial for living well, but not for staying alive. Limbs can be lost, and people can still survive. Doctors try to save arms more than legs because hands are very useful.
Losing too much blood is dangerous. Adults have about 5 liters of blood. Losing more than 3 liters is very hard to recover from. But everyone is different. Some people survive things that seem impossible.
You can live without parts of vital organs. The liver can regrow. The brain can lose parts, but the brain stem must stay healthy. One kidney is enough. If organs are damaged slowly, people can live. Some organs can be replaced with machines. Kidney dialysis and ECMO help. But the liver and brain cannot be fully replaced by machines.
Medical science is getting better. Machines can help organs work. But not all treatments last forever. Some are short-term fixes. Decisions about these treatments depend on the patient's health and wishes.
