Living in certain neighborhoods might affect brain health, especially for Black and Latinx older adults. A recent study looked at how living in segregated areas impacts the brain. They used MRI scans to check brain structures like the hippocampus and white matter.
The study included 269 people, with an average age of 74. About a quarter were Black, another quarter were Latinx, and half were White. Researchers measured how clustered these groups were in their neighborhoods using a special statistic.
They found that Black people in highly Latinx segregated areas had smaller hippocampal volumes. Similarly, Latinx individuals in highly Black segregated neighborhoods also had smaller hippocampal volumes. Additionally, Latinx people in highly Latinx segregated areas had more white matter hyperintensities, which are often linked to cognitive decline.
The study suggests that living in segregated neighborhoods might negatively affect brain health for Black and Latinx individuals. However, this wasn't the case for White participants. The reasons behind these findings aren't fully clear yet. It could be due to factors like access to recreational facilities or other social determinants.
This study is a starting point. More research is needed to confirm these results and understand the underlying mechanisms. It's important to explore how living environments impact brain health and overall well-being.
