Piglets going through a tough transition after weaning. Diarrhea and weak immunity are common challenges they face. A recent study dived into how plant polysaccharides from Isatidis root (IRP) could lend a helping hand. Researchers fed IRP to 40 healthy piglets in varying amounts and observed some fascinating results. They found that the more IRP the piglets got, the less they suffered from diarrhea. Their immune system also got a boost, as seen in the increase of immunoglobulin A, G, and M in their blood.
The gut health of these piglets also improved significantly. The length of tiny villi in their intestines increased, along with the number of goblet cells. The ratio of villus height to crypt depth, a key indicator of gut health, also went up. Amazingly, the expression of certain proteins like IL-10, ZO-1, and occludin that help maintain gut health also increased.
When they looked at the gut bacteria, they saw that some harmful ones like Escherichia coli, Ralstonia pickettii, and Desulfovibrio fairfieldensis reduced in number as IRP levels increased. This means IRP not only helps the piglets' own body but also influences their gut microbes for the better.
In another part of the study, cells similar to the ones in piglets' intestines were grown in a lab. When these cells were exposed to IRP, they showed better health, just like the piglets themselves.
Overall, this study shows that plant polysaccharides like IRP could be a game-changer for young piglets, helping them fight diarrhea and improving their overall gut health.
