How supervision helps child healthcare workers do better work
Fri Apr 24 2026
Around the world, many hospitals rely on supervision to improve how doctors and nurses care for sick children. But does supervision actually work on its own, or does it need extra help like feedback or training sessions? A big study looked at 5, 311 clinics in eight different countries to find out.
The research found that supervision alone isn’t always enough. While it gives workers guidance and helps spot mistakes, it doesn’t fix deeper problems like understaffing or poor resources. Adding feedback or training made a small but meaningful difference in how well workers performed. Still, the improvement wasn’t huge, meaning supervision isn’t a magic solution.
One surprising finding was that bigger or better-funded hospitals didn’t always see bigger benefits from supervision. In fact, smaller clinics sometimes improved more because they could adapt faster. This suggests that supervision works best when it fits the team’s needs, not just their budget.
