How Supplement Use Varies Across Japanese Women’s Generations

A recent survey looked at how women in Japan use dietary supplements and what that tells us about their health habits. Researchers asked three different age groups—young women in dietetics school, middle‑aged mothers, and older grandmothers—to fill out questionnaires about their food intake and supplement use. The study included 3952 students, 3780 mothers, and 2192 grandmothers.
Only a small share of the youngest group used supplements, with just 5. 7 % saying they took any in the last month. In contrast, about a quarter of mothers (24. 3 %) and almost three‑quarters of grandmothers (27. 7 %) reported regular use. The data were gathered in 2011‑12, so the numbers reflect habits at that time.
Where people lived mattered for the youngest and oldest groups. Women who resided in cities of a million or more were more likely to use supplements, suggesting that urban living may make these products easier to obtain. For mothers, education and smoking history were important clues: those who had gone beyond high school or who had quit smoking tended to take supplements more often.
Sleep patterns also differed. Older women who took supplements reported shorter sleep times on average, hinting at a possible link between rest habits and supplement choice. These patterns show that each generation has its own reasons for turning to supplements.
When scientists compared nutrient intake, supplement users generally fared better. Across 15 nutrients measured, those who took supplements were less likely to fall below the Japanese dietary guidelines for many vitamins and minerals. The effect was strongest in younger women, who had better intake for 10 of the nutrients; it held for nine nutrients among mothers and four for grandmothers.
Overall, the study highlights that supplement use in Japan is shaped by age, location, education, and lifestyle. It also shows that taking supplements can help women meet nutrient needs better than relying on food alone.
