The U. S. military is stepping up its game with a new AI tool called GenAI. mil. This platform, powered by Google Gemini, is designed to help service members and Department of War workers get comfortable with AI. It's like a training ground where they can experiment and learn how to use AI in their daily tasks. Recently, the Pentagon added Elon Musk’s xAI Grok models to the mix. This means workers can now use these AI tools safely on government systems, even for tasks that involve sensitive but unclassified information. The goal is to make sure everyone is ready for the bigger AI innovations that are coming. Emelia Probasco, a Navy veteran and expert in military tech, thinks this tool is a big deal. Before GenAI. mil, people were either using less capable tools or, in some cases, using their personal computers—which they weren't supposed to do. Now, they have a secure place to practice and learn.
Probasco doesn't think this tool will change the outcome of wars on its own. But she believes it's an important first step in training. The Department of War is serious about using AI and wants to stay ahead of other countries, like China, who are also experimenting with AI in warfare. China is using AI in many ways, from gathering information for espionage to creating more advanced cyber-attacks. Probasco says there's a race between the U. S. and China to see who can use AI better in military situations. While GenAI. mil is useful, Probasco points out that it's not the tool that will give the U. S. a big advantage in war. There are more sophisticated AI systems in the works, but they won't be announced publicly. These systems have been in development for years and are much more advanced than a simple chatbot.
