Hypertension and Cholesterol: Hidden Links Revealed

In a recent study at Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, researchers examined 347 adults who were already battling high blood pressure. They wanted to find out why many of these patients also carried abnormal cholesterol levels, a condition known as dyslipidaemia. Data were gathered through detailed questionnaires that covered age, gender, income, where people lived, and their everyday habits. Blood samples were taken after fasting to measure key lipid markers.
The results showed that more than half of the participants—58. 5 percent—had at least one abnormal lipid value. Women made up just over half of this group. Several factors stood out as important clues. People who lived in certain areas, earned less money, smoked before, or had higher body mass indexes were more likely to show abnormal cholesterol readings. Even the ratio of waist to hip size played a role.
Interestingly, common symptoms such as morning headaches and irregular heartbeats did not differ much between those with and without dyslipidaemia. This suggests that these symptoms are more tied to high blood pressure itself than to cholesterol problems.
When looking at body weight, a surprising pattern emerged: individuals who were classified as obese or overweight actually had lower odds of having dyslipidaemia compared to those with normal weight. This counterintuitive finding points to the complexity of metabolic health.
Occupation also mattered, especially for triglycerides and low‑density lipoprotein levels. Certain jobs were linked to higher or lower values, indicating that lifestyle and stress associated with work can influence cholesterol.
Overall, the study highlights how common abnormal cholesterol is among people with hypertension and shows that social and health factors are intertwined. The authors recommend routine lipid checks for everyone with high blood pressure, along with a comprehensive plan that tackles all cardiovascular risks together.
