Immersive Water World Turns Science Into Adventure

Ahmedabad, IndiaTue Jun 23 2026
A huge aquarium in Ahmedabad, India, opened its doors in 2021. The building covers about 150, 000 square feet and sits on a 200‑acre campus known as Science City. Designed by a team that includes Jayesh Hariyani, Adi Mistri and others, the project is India’s largest public aquarium. It invites more than one million people each year to explore marine life in a hands‑on way. The facility is part of a new wave of “edutainment” centres that blend learning with entertainment. Students and families can touch real specimens, watch interactive displays and learn about ecosystems in a way that school lessons alone cannot match. The planners hoped the aquarium would become a bridge between formal science classes and everyday curiosity.
Special programs make the experience affordable for all. Schools receive discounted tickets, while children from rural areas can visit for free. These initiatives aim to raise environmental awareness across diverse communities. Behind the scenes, many companies contributed. From cooling systems by Carrier to glass from Saint Gobain and steel by TATA, the design used a wide range of products. The interior and landscape were crafted by INI Design Studio, while structural work was handled by Ducon Consultant. A team of engineers from INI Infrastructure & Engineering and other specialists ensured the building’s systems run smoothly. The aquarium is more than a tourist attraction; it serves as a living classroom where visitors learn by doing. By turning science into an immersive journey, the project hopes to inspire future generations of explorers and protectors of our oceans.
