Believe it or not, trash can be a big problem when it comes to greenhouse gases. In China, people are turning to incinerators to deal with municipal solid waste, or MSW. Researchers decided to take a closer look at two incinerators in Qingdao. They found that Plant A released 56. 55 kilograms of CO2-equivalent per ton of MSW, while Plant B was a bit higher at 96. 73 kilograms. So, what's the catch? The type of waste matters a lot. Recyclables and food waste play a big role in those emissions.
You'd think that better recycling would mean fewer emissions, right? Well, not always. Sometimes, improving recycling efficiency doesn't lower the carbon footprint of what's left for incineration. Who knew? So, what can help? Using the heat from the waste to keep things warm is a great idea. And catching those harmful carbon emissions from the smoke? Yeah, that's important too. Mixing in industrial waste or sewage sludge could also be a good move.
