India steps in to help airlines with fuel cost worries

New Delhi, IndiaThu Jun 04 2026
India recently set aside 100 billion rupees, roughly one billion dollars, to ease the strain on airlines caused by soaring jet fuel prices. These sky-high costs partly stem from tensions in West Asia, which have disrupted oil supplies and pushed prices up worldwide. Airlines often feel this the most since fuel can swallow up to forty percent of their operating budgets.
Instead of handing money directly to airlines, the government chose a different route. It will offer interest-free loans to fuel companies. These loans cover the difference between the high, market-driven fuel prices and the lower rates airlines pay. The idea is simple: keep ticket prices from climbing too fast while helping airlines stay in the air. Officials say this move protects both local and international flights. Without support, some routes could disappear if airlines cut them to save costs. Still, the plan raises questions. Will this stop fuel prices from rising further? And is this kind of help fair to other struggling businesses that don’t get government support?
