Inflammation, Hormones and Vitamin D in US Women

USASat Jun 06 2026
Women who carry higher levels of inflammation tend to be older and heavier. They often have larger waistlines, a higher body mass index, and more cases of high blood pressure or diabetes. These factors help explain why their inflammation markers are higher than those in lighter, younger women. When scientists looked at blood samples from 3, 179 U. S. women aged 18 to 80, they found that inflammation was linked to many hormone levels. Higher inflammation was connected with lower amounts of certain reproductive hormones such as 17α‑hydroxyprogesterone, androstenedione, and follicle‑stimulating hormone.
It was also tied to lower vitamin D in the blood. After taking body weight and other health factors into account, some of these links stayed strong. Inflammation still showed a clear connection with the hormone AMH, the estrogen estrone, and cholesterol levels. Conversely, it was still associated with lower follicle‑stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. The study suggests that the body’s inflammatory state is intertwined with both reproductive hormones and heart‑healthy cholesterol. However, much of this relationship depends on body weight and other obesity‑related factors.
