Inflation, Tariffs, and Small Businesses: A Look at the Impact

Small-business owners aren't thrilled about the idea of more tariffs. With former President Donald Trump hinting at higher tariffs if he returns to office, businesses like Virginia Beer Co. are worried about increased costs. Chris Smith, the co-founder, saw a 5. 5% surcharge on a supplier's bill after Trump's 2019 steel tariffs. This fee hasn't gone away, and it's costing Smith's business around $1, 000 a year. The beer business runs on tight margins, making it hard to absorb extra costs. But larger companies like Constellation Brands, which imports Corona and Modelo, can handle tariffs better. They reported $3 billion in quarterly revenue, dwarfing smaller operators. Tariffs on Chinese goods were first imposed by Trump in 2018. The Biden administration kept most of them in place, adding new ones in May. These tariffs have cost Americans about $79 billion, the Tax Foundation estimates. While consumers might not feel the pinch, business owners sure do.Many large companies have adapted by changing suppliers or absorbing costs. Ryan Zagata of Brooklyn Bicycle Co. had to raise prices by 18% to 22% after Trump's tariffs. Trump's proposed tariffs, if re-elected, include a 20% levy on all imports, 60% on Chinese goods, and 100% on countries ditching the dollar. These are extreme by historical standards. Economists warn these could disrupt business plans and encourage retaliation from other countries. Trump's campaign dismisses these warnings, claiming tariffs will boost job growth and lower inflation. But many economists disagree, saying higher costs for consumers and greater inequality will result. Nichole MacDonald, owner of the Sash Bag, finds her profit margins tightening. Tariffs and increased material costs have made her product 25% more expensive. She's shifted some manufacturing to India but worries about alienating loyal customers with price hikes.
