Instacart adds overseas tech muscle with Instaleap buy
Bogotá, Colombia,Wed Apr 15 2026
The grocery delivery giant Instacart just snapped up Instaleap, a tech company based in Colombia that helps supermarkets run smoother online shops. Unlike Instacart’s usual app that lets shoppers order groceries straight to their door, Instaleap builds the behind-the-scenes tech for nearly 100 grocery stores spread across Latin America, Europe and the Middle East. The deal doesn’t come with a price tag, but Instacart clearly sees value in the team’s deep connections with retailers and its experience operating in different markets.
Instacart has been quietly shifting gears lately. While most people still know it as the app that brings your weekly shop to your doorstep, the company has spent the past few years quietly selling its tech tools to other grocery chains. That way, those chains can build their own ordering apps without starting from scratch. After the Instaleap purchase, Instacart plans to offer even more of its own software to Instaleap’s existing retail customers, blending the two systems over time.
This move is all about growing internationally without flooding new countries with Instacart’s own brand. Instead of launching its famous consumer app everywhere, Instacart is selling the software that powers online grocery services to big retailers like Costco. Costco will soon use Instacart’s systems to let customers in Spain and France order groceries online, marking another step outside North America.
The buyout shows how Instacart is playing the long game. By teaming up with Instaleap, it gains instant access to technology and retail partners in regions where building from scratch would take years. At the same time, it avoids the messy work of competing directly with local delivery apps or setting up its own brand in markets where shoppers are already loyal to different services.
