The number of overweight and obese adolescents around the world has been rising. This study delves into how Internet use affects body weight in Chinese teens between the ages of 11 and 19. Researchers looked at data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey from 2004 to 2015, focusing on 3054 participants, with nearly half being female.
Using statistical models, they found that frequent Internet use leads to higher body mass index (BMI) and a greater probability of being overweight. Specifically, it boosts BMI by 2. 56% and the chance of being overweight by 6. 1%. However, it doesn’t significantly increase the risk of obesity.
The reason behind this weight gain? Spending too much time online causes kids to sit more and eat more, creating an imbalance between how much energy they take in and how much they burn. The more time spent playing online games, the higher the likelihood of being overweight. Other online activities like watching movies, surfing the web, or chatting don’t seem to affect body weight as much.
Interestingly, rural areas and boys are more susceptible to these effects. To combat this, encouraging physical activity and healthy eating habits, while reducing online gaming time, could help curb overweight and obesity among teens.
