Iran and U. S. Agree on Stop‑Fight Deal, IAEA Ready to Act
Geneva, SwitzerlandThu Jun 18 2026
The United Nations nuclear agency said it is glad that Washington and Iran have signed a temporary peace deal. The head of the agency, Rafael Grossi, told reporters in Geneva that the next step is to start detailed work on how to make the agreement real. He added that the agency will sit with American and Iranian experts to lay out clear actions.
The deal, made on a Wednesday evening, is a 14‑point plan that extends a ceasefire announced in April for another 60 days. It covers fighting in Lebanon and gives both sides time to negotiate a lasting truce. The U. S. and Iran leaders signed the paper electronically in English and Farsi, according to their officials.
The conflict began when the United States and Israel attacked Iran on February 28. The fighting spread across the region, killing more than 7, 000 people, mainly in Iran and Lebanon. It also pushed up energy costs, stoked inflation, and raised worries about food shortages in poorer countries.
The IAEA is now ready to move from words to action. It will work with both governments to turn the memorandum into concrete steps that can be monitored and verified.
