Iran Deal Revisited: What Went Wrong
IranSat Mar 28 2026
The 2015 deal stopped Iran from building nuclear weapons.
It let the U. S. , EU, and UN lift sanctions.
Iran got its money back and agreed to cut its nuclear stockpile.
The plan worked for a year.
Secretary Kerry said the agreement had stopped Iran’s threat without war.
The deal included four parts:
1) Iran must shut down its weapons plants and stop future projects.
2) It will reduce centrifuges that make weapons material.
3) The IAEA gets “anywhere, anytime” access to watch Iran.
4) In return, the U. S. , EU, and UN lift sanctions.
In 2018 the new president broke that deal.
He tightened sanctions again and pushed Iran toward conflict.
The new proposal looks almost the same as the old one.
It also wants Iran to give up nuclear weapons and let inspectors watch it.
The only extra demand is calling the Strait of Hormuz a “free zone. ”
The old deal had help from all EU members and the UN Security Council.
The new plan has no partners yet.
When the deal was broken, Iran stopped its weapons program.
Inspectors saw this in regular checks.
The country was ready to grow economically and move away from its hard‑line rule.
Instead, war began.
Iran responded by targeting oil routes and energy sites.
The region’s fuel supply became risky.
Peace talks will still happen, but the damage is deep.
The U. S. shares responsibility for lives lost in this conflict.
Its own actions sparked the fire that burned so many.
