Iran May Open Oman Side of Hormuz to Ships if Deal Reached
Strait of Hormuz, OmanWed Apr 15 2026
A recent conversation with a source close to Tehran revealed that Iran might allow vessels to travel freely through the Oman side of the Strait of Hormuz, provided a peace agreement is signed with the United States.
The strait is a vital artery for global trade, carrying roughly 20 % of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas.
Since the conflict began on February 28, hundreds of tankers and other ships have been trapped in the Gulf, leaving 20, 000 seafarers unable to leave.
The source said Iran would consider removing any obstacles it has placed in Omani waters, but the details—such as whether mines would be cleared or if ships linked to Israel could pass—remain unclear.
The proposal depends on Washington’s willingness to meet Tehran’s conditions, a key point in any potential resolution.
The White House has not yet commented on the matter.
