Iran Opens Strait of Hormuz to “Non‑Hostile” Ships, Says Letter
Strait of Hormuz, IranTue Mar 24 2026
Iran has announced that vessels it considers “non‑hostile” can pass through the Strait of Hormuz if they work with Iranian authorities. The message was sent to members of the International Maritime Organization, a global body that oversees safe and clean shipping.
The announcement comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and Western allies, especially the United States and Israel. Because of the conflict, about one‑fifth of the world’s oil and gas flows through the strait have slowed or stopped, putting pressure on global energy supplies.
In its communication, Iran’s foreign ministry said it has taken “necessary and proportionate measures” to stop any party that supports the U. S. or Israel from using the waterway for hostile actions against Tehran. The ministry also stated that ships linked to those countries, or other actors in the conflict, are not allowed “innocent” or “non‑hostile” passage.
The International Maritime Organization, which includes 176 member states, is responsible for setting rules that keep ships safe and protect the environment. While the report was noted by a major newspaper, independent confirmation of the letter’s contents is still pending.
