In a significant move, Israel's government has given the green light for 19 new Jewish settlements in the West Bank. This decision comes from the far-right finance minister, who has been a strong advocate for expanding settlements in the region. Over the past few years, the total number of new settlements has reached a record high of 69.
The approval of these new settlements marks a nearly 50% increase since the current government took office. In 2022, there were 141 settlements in the West Bank, and with the latest approval, that number has risen to 210, according to Peace Now, an organization that monitors settlement activity.
Settlements are widely regarded as illegal under international law. The recent approval also includes the retroactive legalization of some existing settlement outposts and the establishment of settlements on land from which Palestinians were evacuated. This move has raised concerns about the future of a Palestinian state, as settlements are seen as a major obstacle to its creation.
The decision comes at a time when the U. S. is pushing for a ceasefire in Gaza and a potential pathway to a Palestinian state. However, the expansion of settlements seems to be working against this goal.
In addition to the settlement expansion, there has been a surge in attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank. During the olive harvest in October, settlers carried out an average of eight attacks per day, the highest number since the United Nations began collecting data in 2006. These attacks continued into November, with at least 136 more recorded by November 24. The attacks included burning cars, desecrating mosques, ransacking industrial plants, and destroying cropland. Israeli authorities have largely responded with occasional condemnations but little else.
The violence has also resulted in the deaths of two Palestinians, including a 16-year-old, during clashes with Israeli forces. The Israeli military has increased its operations in the West Bank since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack that sparked the war in Gaza.
Amidst the conflict, the top Catholic leader in the Holy Land visited Gaza's only Catholic church to celebrate a pre-Christmas Mass. The Holy Family Parish has served as a refuge for both Christians and Muslims, sheltering hundreds of displaced people. The cardinal expressed hope for a new life amidst the destruction, noting that the Christian community aims to be a stable presence in the region.
