The United States skier Jessie Diggins finished third in the women’s 10‑kilometer freestyle at the Winter Games, adding a bronze medal to her growing Olympic collection.
Despite suffering a rib injury earlier in the competition, she pushed through the course and crossed the line with a time that placed her just under 50 seconds behind Sweden’s Frida Karlsson, who secured the gold.
Karlsson’s performance was dominant, completing the race in 22 minutes and 49. 2 seconds, while Sweden’s Ebba Andersson earned silver with a time 46. 6 seconds slower than the leader.
Diggins’s injury occurred during the opening skiathlon event, where she fell and bruised her ribs. The pain carried over into the individual sprint, causing her to exit in the early heats.
In spite of these setbacks, she managed to recover enough to compete in the interval start race, where her determination earned her a place on the podium.
The 34‑year‑old skier has already achieved gold, silver and bronze medals in previous Olympics, making this her final season on the world stage.
Her collapse to the ground at the finish line, shouting in pain, highlighted both her resilience and the physical toll of high‑level competition.
The incident serves as a reminder that even top athletes must balance ambition with health, especially when injuries threaten to derail their goals.
Diggins’s story underscores the importance of perseverance, support systems, and strategic recovery in elite sports.
