Journalists Hit in Unexpected Night Strike

In the early hours of Friday morning, an Israeli airstrike targeted a guesthouse in southeast Lebanon, killing three journalists. This attack, occurring around 3 a. m. , caught everyone off guard. The guesthouse, nestled among trees, had been rented by various media outlets to cover the ongoing conflict. It was reduced to rubble, with cars marked "PRESS" flipped over and covered in dust. There was no warning from the Israeli army prior to the strike. Mohammad Farhat, a reporter for Lebanon’s Al Jadeed TV, described the chaotic scene. "The first question we asked each other was, 'Are you alive? '" The victims included Ghassan Najjar and Mohammed Rida of Al-Mayadeen TV, and Wissam Qassim of Al-Manar TV, affiliated with Hezbollah. This attack followed a previous strike on Al-Mayadeen's office in Beirut.Journalists had deemed Hasbaya safer after an evacuation order from a nearby town. Elsy Moufarrej, coordinator for the Alternative Press Syndicate, argued that the attack aimed to drive journalists out of the south. Imran Khan from Al Jazeera English noted that the journalists were sleeping after long days of covering the conflict. Hussein Hoteit, a cameraman for Al-Qahira TV, survived under debris, highlighting the sudden and intense nature of the strike. The toll on journalists has been high. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported that 128 journalists, mostly Palestinian, had been killed in Gaza and Lebanon over the past year. Many were targeted by Israeli forces. The CPJ emphasized that Israel’s conduct of the war has had an unprecedented impact on media workers. This incident sparked international outcry, with press advocacy groups and UN experts expressing concern. Lebanon’s Health Minister noted that over the past year, 11 journalists had been killed and eight wounded by Israeli fire in Lebanon alone. The trend of targeting press centers is seen as an effort to suppress truth and impose a media blackout.
