Jumping High: How Muscles Help You Skip Better

Ever wondered why skipping feels tougher than running, even though you're not hitting the ground as hard? Scientists did too! They found that when you skip, your body moves up and down more, which burns more energy. This happens because certain muscles, like the gluteus maximus, vasti, and soleus, work extra hard to lift your body up during skipping. Even though these muscles don't push as hard as they do when you run, they still help you jump higher. Isn't that cool?
The study looked at five adults who ran and skipped on a special treadmill. They used a computer program to track how the muscles in different body parts helped move the body up and down. Surprisingly, during the first part of skipping (Skip 1), muscles mainly worked to lift the body up, unlike in running or the second part of skipping (Skip 2), where they help slow down the body's downward motion. This helps explain why skipping makes you feel more tired than running.
