A jury has cleared Hernandez Govan of all charges related to the tragic death of rapper Young Dolph. After just three hours of deliberation, the 45-year-old was acquitted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Govan's legal battle began in November 2022, when he was arrested and accused of orchestrating the deadly ambush.
The shooting occurred on November 17, 2021, at Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies in Memphis. Young Dolph was fatally shot 22 times by two masked gunmen. Justin Johnson, one of the alleged shooters, was convicted in September 2024 and sentenced to life in prison. The prosecution claimed that Govan handpicked Johnson and Cornelius Smith to carry out the attack.
Smith, who testified against Govan, claimed that Govan hired him and Johnson for the job and tipped them off about Dolph's whereabouts. However, Smith's testimony was met with skepticism. Govan's defense attorney, Manny Arora, argued that Smith's statements were motivated by a desire for a lighter sentence.
Arora also contested the prosecution's use of cellphone records, stating that they did not conclusively link Govan to the murder. He expressed disappointment that the case was pursued at all, given the lack of substantial evidence. The high-profile nature of the case raised questions about the appropriateness of the charges.
The impact of Young Dolph's death extends beyond the courtroom. His partner, Mia Jaye, previously shared her grief, highlighting the sudden and devastating loss. The case has sparked discussions about the consequences of violence and the importance of thorough investigations.
