The Kansas City Chiefs are making a big move. They are leaving Missouri for Kansas in 2031. This news caught many people off guard, especially politicians in Missouri.
Missouri House Speaker Jonathan Patterson admitted it was a shock. He said, "No matter how long we thought about this, it's still a shock. " The reason behind the move? Money. Jackson County, Missouri, voters said no to a sales tax hike in 2024. This tax would have paid for upgrades to Arrowhead Stadium and a new park for the Kansas City Royals.
Kansas stepped in with a better offer. They proposed a new domed stadium. This stadium can host more than just football games. It could also attract big events like the Super Bowl. Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe was not happy. He said the Chiefs are leaving behind a legacy. Arrowhead Stadium has been a special place for fans since 1972.
Missouri isn't giving up just yet. Jackson County Executive Phil LeVota said Missourians don't give up easily. He mentioned they have a plan if things don't work out with Kansas. But the truth is, Missouri had its chance. The people voted, and they chose not to pay extra taxes for the stadium.
Some politicians might blame each other. But the simple fact is, the voters in Jackson County made their choice. They didn't want to pay for the renovations. This decision opened the door for the Chiefs to move to Kansas.
