Keeping Hydrated Won’t Stop Kidney Stones, Study Finds

Kidney stones hurt a lot. Doctors say drinking lots of water can help stop them, but new research shows it’s hard to keep up with that advice. A team of scientists tested a program that used smart water bottles to track how much people drank. The bottles could send data and even give small cash rewards when a person hit their daily goal. They also sent text reminders and offered coaching to help people remember to drink more. In the study, 1, 658 teens and adults who had kidney stones were split into two groups. One group got the full program with rewards and coaching. The other group only received a smart bottle but no extra support. Both groups drank more water than usual, and their urine output went up over the two‑year follow‑up.
Despite drinking more, the people in the reward program did not have fewer new stones or smaller ones than those who only had a bottle. The researchers think the problem is that a single water target does not fit everyone. Age, weight, activity level and other health factors all change how much fluid a person really needs. They suggest future plans should set personalized goals, figure out why people stop drinking enough, and develop new ways—both behavioral and medical—to lower stone risk. If keeping up with water intake isn’t enough, doctors will need to find other ways to keep minerals dissolved in urine. The study reminds us that kidney stones are a tough, ongoing issue that can ruin work and sleep. Simple fixes may not be enough; more research is needed.
