Kids Take the Lead: A Local Market Showcases Young Creators

Lexington, SC, USAMon Jun 08 2026
A sunny afternoon in Lexington turned into a bustling marketplace where children from five to seventeen set up their own stalls. They offered handmade jewelry, colorful artwork, and homemade snacks, turning the Flora and Fauna Marketplace into a mini‑farmers market run by teens. The event is more than just a sale; it’s a classroom outside the school walls. Participants learn to count money, greet customers, and explain their products—all skills that adults teach in business classes. One young vendor, Blakely, proudly mentioned saving her earnings in a bank account to show that even small profits can grow into real savings. Another, Ellie, shared how she decided to turn her art hobby into a small business, giving her a chance to earn from her talent.
The Young family runs a bookstore called Born 2 Read, where they display the books they read together at home. Their co‑owner, London, noted that managing the shop helped her overcome shyness and feel more comfortable speaking publicly. Parents see the benefits too. Brandi Young highlighted that the market teaches children entrepreneurship and communication, while Allison Hallmon praised how it builds confidence and financial literacy. The next kids market will take place on June 17 during Family Fun Day at the Northwest Family YMCA in Irmo, inviting more families to join and support these young entrepreneurs.
