LATAM Airlines: Using AI and Tech to Change Travel
Rio de Janeiro, BrazilFri Jun 19 2026
LATAM Airlines is upgrading how planes fly and how passengers book trips by mixing AI with regular software. At a big meeting in Rio de Janeiro recently, leaders shared how these tools are fixing old problems in flying. One big win is in keeping planes in the air longer. By using AI to plan maintenance checks, the airline added 1, 440 extra revenue days to its schedule. That means more flights and more money without buying new planes.
Passengers are noticing the changes too. LATAM’s customer scores have climbed in the last few years as digital tools made booking and flying smoother. Their top score hit 54 overall, but for premium travelers, it jumps to 61. When focusing just on digital services, the score rockets to over 70. A $60 million upgrade to Wi-Fi on long flights will soon let South American travelers browse the internet mid-air like never before.
Behind the scenes, AI isn’t just about customer service—it’s saving millions by making maintenance smarter. A tool called eMantto predicts when planes need care, cutting ground time and costs. Working with partners, it links live flight data to repair schedules, saving $50 million and winning over 92% of mechanics. Crews give it a 4. 7-star rating, proving tech helps everywhere from hangars to headquarters.
Tablets now replace paper manuals for ground teams. Mechanics tap into thousands of pages of diagrams, logs, and parts lists instantly. The AI also digests technician notes—even voice logs—to spot patterns in problems. This speeds up fixes and improves safety without slowing down flights.
The airline’s overall profit rose 49% last year, showing these changes aren’t just flashy upgrades. By blending AI with real-world flying, LATAM turns data into days in the sky and smiles at checkout.
