Lead Testing Mix-Up in Colorado Schools

This mess-up affected the testing method used to check for metals in water, specifically method 200. 7. The state's public health lab is now on a mission to fix things. They've paused water testing and are digging through years of data to find any other mistakes. So far, they've found a few errors in some tests, but nothing that points to a big health risk. Still, they're being extra careful. The lab is working closely with the EPA to review tests for high-priority contaminants. They've even brought in outside experts to boost their quality control. The lab has reviewed over 60, 000 data points from tests conducted between 2018 and 2024. They found that protocols were followed correctly in almost all cases, but 16 samples from 2022-2023 need to be retested. Rocky Mountain Montessori Academy, El Paso County. Elk Creek Elementary School, Jefferson County. Sips & Giggles, Morgan County.The lab is taking a hard look at its quality assurance processes and planning improvements. They're also making sure they have a solid plan for the future. The schools are taking precautions, too. Rocky Mountain Montessori Academy, for example, is providing bottled water for students and staff while they wait for retest results. The Chief Medical Officer of CDPHE, Dr. Ned Calonge, is confident that there's no immediate health risk. He wants to make sure the public is aware of the situation and that the schools feel comfortable with the retesting process. The lab is planning to retest the water on Friday morning. If the results show higher lead levels, the state will replace the faucets. If everything is clean, it's back to business as usual. The schools are taking this seriously, and so is the lab.
