Leafs' coach struggles with aging team and poor strategy

Toronto, USAFri Apr 17 2026
The Toronto Maple Leafs had high hopes heading into the season, but their performance took a major hit compared to last year. The team’s big drop in points (30 fewer than the previous season) has put the spotlight on head coach Craig Berube. Many believe he failed to make the most of the talented players on his roster. His rigid playstyle—focusing on a "dump-and-chase" approach—didn’t suit the team, and they lacked any real backup plans when things went wrong. Berube’s struggles weren’t just on the ice. At a recent press event, he admitted the team didn’t meet expectations, stating, "It’s on me. It’s on everybody. " But his words didn’t match his actions. Last year, he helped the team win their division by using a structured 1-2-2 forecheck. This season, though, the same players were older and slower, and Berube didn’t adapt. Key defenders like Morgan Rielly and Brandon Carlo struggled, and the team’s defense crumbled when opponents attacked the net.
One of the biggest turning points was Auston Matthews’ injury after a brutal hit by Radko Gudas. Matthews downplayed the incident, saying the team "responded in the third period, " but the real question is why Toronto’s defense let it happen in the first place. Berube’s excuses—like saying "a system’s a system"—didn’t explain why his tactics kept failing. Then there were questionable roster decisions. Berube gave star players like Calle Jarnkrok and Steven Lorentz too much freedom, while rookies like Dennis Hildeby, who outplayed everyone in training camp, barely got a chance. Even promising prospect Easton Cowan was sent back and forth between the NHL and AHL for no clear reason. By the time the team realized they were out of playoff contention, it was too late. Berube stuck with underperforming veterans instead of giving younger players a shot. The offense never clicked, and Toronto’s top six forwards couldn’t find consistency. Early in the season, Berube stubbornly put Max Domi on the first line, ignoring other options like Matias Maccelli. Even players admitted they had trouble adjusting to Berube’s harsh rules on turnovers in offensive zones.
