Lebanon pushes for US help after fresh conflict with Israel
south Lebanon, Beirut, Saksakiyeh,Tue May 12 2026
Lebanon’s leader is asking the US to step in and help stop Israel’s strikes in southern Lebanon, where homes are being destroyed and lives are being lost. Over the past three days alone, Israeli attacks have killed 74 people, even after a temporary truce was supposed to calm things down. The violence started back in March when Hezbollah, a group backed by Iran, fired at Israel in support of Tehran. Since then, fighting has mostly stayed in southern Lebanon, where Israel says it’s protecting itself from Hezbollah threats.
But the death count keeps rising—nearly 2, 900 people have died since March, including hundreds of civilians like medics, women, and children. Israel claims it’s targeting militants hiding in civilian areas, while Lebanon says the attacks are indiscriminate. A recent strike in the town of Saksakiyeh killed seven people, showing how quickly the conflict can turn deadly.
Now, Lebanon is trying to open a new channel for peace talks. A third round of discussions is set for mid-May in Washington, where Lebanese and Israeli officials will meet for the first time in years. Lebanon’s side is led by a former ambassador, chosen by the president to represent the country’s interests. But not everyone in Lebanon agrees with these talks. Some critics say Hezbollah’s actions have forced the country into war without public support.
Hezbollah itself has already rejected the negotiations, calling them a mistake. Meanwhile, Israel has kept up its military actions, even hitting Beirut’s southern suburbs—its first attack there since the truce. Israel claims it took out a top Hezbollah commander, though the group hasn’t confirmed it.
Behind the headlines, over a million people have been forced to leave their homes, mostly in southern Lebanon. The war has already cost lives on both sides—Israel reports 17 soldiers and two civilians killed, while Lebanon’s numbers are far higher. With tensions still high, the question remains: Will these talks bring real peace, or just another break in the fighting?
