Little Coders: Saginaw Preschool Pioneers Tech Learning for Tiny Tots

In Saginaw, Michigan, a big step is being taken to introduce computer science to very young minds. Jerome Green STEM Preschool has become the first in the state to roll out a computer science curriculum for preschoolers. This isn't about tiny fingers tapping on keyboards, though. Instead, kids will learn coding through play and hands-on activities. The preschool, run by Saginaw Intermediate School District, is mixing coding with regular classroom fun. Four- and five-year-olds in Early Head Start, Head Start, and Great Start Readiness Program classes will get a taste of coding. They will play with robotics, solve puzzles, and work on projects that boost their reading, math, and creative skills.Dr. Erin Senkowski, deputy superintendent, cheered this move. She called it a bold step, showing that Saginaw is ready to try new things. The preschool has a roadmap for the next few years. It includes training teachers, setting up the right tools, and making sure coding fits smoothly into the curriculum. Principal Corey Nichols emphasized that this isn't about screen time. It's about getting kids to think critically and solve problems in fun, interactive ways. Nichols believes that preschoolers are capable of more than we often think. A team of teachers and experts worked together to make this happen. They include Jessica Theile, Sandra Rabadue, Elaina Hewitt, Jennifer Steckly, and LaToya Sewell. With this plan, Saginaw could set an example for other preschools across Michigan.
