Astronomers are excited as a new comet, Comet C/2024 S1, is set to make its appearance near Earth this week, just in time for Halloween. Discovered at the end of September, this comet will pass close to our planet on October 24. To catch a glimpse, look towards the eastern sky before sunrise. After passing the sun, it might reappear in the western sky during Halloween.
Interestingly, this comet has been dubbed the "Halloween Comet" and has grabbed attention because it's holding together as it approaches the sun. Some experts think it could even be visible during the day. NASA's Gordon Johnston noted that areas around Washington, D. C. , might see the comet early in the morning from October 21.
For the best view, Africa, Europe, and South America are in the ideal positions. However, on the East Coast of the U. S. , the comet will be brightest on the sun's lower left side after sunrise. This means it will be more challenging to spot due to potential interference from sunlight and clouds.
Safety is crucial; avoid using binoculars or telescopes near the sun to protect your eyes. This comet might be a fragment of the Great Comet of 1106, which cast shadows like the full moon. Its origin could even trace back to Aristotle’s Comet from 371 BC.
