In the upcoming anime series Dan Da Dan, two young adults, Okarun and Momo, find themselves entangled in a supernatural adventure that tests their relationship. The show, based on the manga by Yukinobu Tatsu, follows the duo as they battle aliens and yokai, all while trying to find Okarun's missing genitalia.
The creators of Dan Da Dan, including producer Aoi Hiroyuki, aimed to focus on the everyday interactions between Okarun and Momo, calling them "everyday action" or "everyday direction. " This approach allows the animation to capture the tone and nuances of their relationship. Hiroyuki explained that the team wanted to use action sequences instead of words to convey these small interactions, making the animation more dynamic and engaging.
The team also used "lead scenes" with distinct beats that highlight the changes in Momo and Okarun's relationship. For example, the scene where Momo hands Okarun a magazine and the scene where Okarun returns Momo's clothes, which are similar in style but demonstrate the growth of their relationship.
Dan Da Dan's success lies in its ability to blend different genres, such as horror, rom-coms, and more, into a cohesive narrative. Director Fuga Yamashiro's unique approach, which draws inspiration from various media, is credited for the series' distinct tone.
