Maine Universities Open New Online Lab Science Degree for Working Professionals
Maine, USASat Apr 11 2026
The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the University of Maine at Augusta have teamed up to create a fully online bachelor’s program in medical laboratory science. The move is aimed at widening career paths for lab technicians and filling a growing need for skilled workers in Maine’s health sector.
The program is designed for those who already hold an associate degree in medical laboratory technology and want to step into advanced practice or leadership roles. Unlike many courses, it does not require extra clinical practicum time, making it easier for people who are already employed in lab settings to upgrade their skills and raise their earnings.
Maine’s only existing medical laboratory technology degree, the MLT Program of Maine, has already trained hundreds of technicians for hospitals and clinics across the state. The new bachelor’s degree builds on that foundation, offering a higher‑level credential that aligns with national demand. According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 24, 000 medical laboratory science jobs open each year in the country. In Maine, the healthcare industry is expanding fast, and laboratories need more trained professionals to support diagnosis, monitoring, and new testing technologies.
The universities highlight that laboratory specialists are often the unseen backbone of modern medicine, yet their importance is hard to overstate. By giving working professionals a flexible way to earn a bachelor’s degree, the partnership aims to strengthen Maine’s healthcare workforce and ensure that hospitals can deliver high‑quality care.
Students already in the field see this as a clear route to growth. One local lab technician shared that she can earn her bachelor’s degree without leaving her job or community, which is a big advantage for many who live in rural areas.
The new degree will begin in the fall of 2026 and is part of a broader goal to double the university system’s online offerings by 2028, providing affordable, high‑quality education for Maine residents who have college credits but no degree.
